135 Years of Mentor-Mentee Relationships at HKUMed | HKUMed135

On top of classroom learning, medical training traditionally relies on a mentor-mentee model to nurture new doctors. HKUMed has not only produced talented healthcare workers over its 135-year history, but also helped to forge tight bonds between masters and their apprentices. We have created a series to highlight these mentor-mentee relationships and tell us more about how these bonds have taken members of our community to new heights.

“Everyone has a different personality, specialty and future. Thus, I don’t want Dr Li to be like me, I want him to take his own path.”

Professor CS Lau, Dean of Medicine, taught Dr Philip Li (MBBS 2012), Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, when he was a medical student and encouraged him to be the first in Hong Kong to pursue a specialism in immunology and allergy.

From student-teacher turned colleagues and mentor-mentee, Dr Li credits Professor Lau’s support as being vital to his success. We take a look at how they formed their professional relationship and what they have learnt from one another.

“There will always be the temptation to take the easy way out, but I’ve learned from Professor Luk that sometimes the hardest route is the right one.”

A three-month internship in Orthopaedics and Traumatology (O&T) changed the life of Dr Jason Cheung (MBBS 2007). Clinical Associate Professor Dr Cheung reminisced about how Professor Keith Luk (MBBS 1977), Emeritus Professor and Honorary Clinical Professor, piqued his interest in spine surgery and research.

As the current and former heads of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, they discuss how the mentor-mentee relationship shaped their professional journeys.

“I was interested in cancer research and Dr Lee would patiently answer my questions, and I hoped to learn more from him during my summer vacation.”

From a sincere email asking to shadow Clinical Oncologist Dr Victor Lee (MBBS 2002), Dr William Leung (MBBS 2016) joined Dr Lee’s research team during his first summer holiday as a medical student. He returned every summer up until his graduation.

As Assistant Dean in Assessment and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Oncology, Dr Lee found it a humbling experience to witness Dr Leung’s progress each year.

Now a resident doctor in medicine at Queen Mary Hospital, Dr Leung recalls how he published his first research paper with Dr Lee and shares the secrets to maintaining a mentor-mentee relationship.

Dr Carmen Wong, an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, and her “senior apprentice” Vincent Yuen tell us how their mentor-mentee bond propels their research work. Welcoming Vincent to her lab as a research assistant five years ago, Dr Wong saw his talent for scientific research and encouraged him to pursue a PhD.

After gaining the confidence to pursue his PhD, Vincent is grateful to Dr Wong for having changed his perspective of science. While Dr Wong is also grateful for Vincent and her other students who have allowed her to better understand herself as a supervisor.
